ELECTRICITY 101: IT'S NOT A CAR ⚡

When dealing with exposed wires on a commercial demo, the rules of electricity are completely different than working on your truck.

A common rookie mistake is treating a building like a car battery. In a vehicle, red is positive and black is negative. In a building, it's the opposite.

Here is the breakdown from our crew:

Black is Live: "It's always the black that has power". This is your hot wire.

Red is Also Live: While less common, the red wire is also a power line.

White is Neutral: "White's always uh neutral".

Bare Copper is Ground: The uninsulated wire is simply the ground.

The Golden Rule: Never assume a wire is dead. Always use a circuit or volt tester. "If it starts beeping at ya, it means it's still alive". Even after you confirm the power is off, you should put a marret (wire nut) back on the black wire just to be safe.

When we deconstruct commercial spaces, we always check the back of the drywall. The manufacturers stamp it right on the board.

Take a look at this one: "29 07 98". That means this wall was put up on the 29th day of the 7th month (July) in 1998.

"Drywall won't last forever... but if you keep it well enough away from moisture... it will last for a long time".

It's a cool little detail that demolition crews usually miss because they just smash it all to dust.

WHEN THE WALL COMES DOWN AND THE LIGHTS STAY UP 💡

You're taking down a wall, and suddenly you've got a live fluorescent light fixture dangling from the ceiling. This is a common hazard on commercial demo jobs. Here's how our crew handles it safely.

Don't Touch the Bulbs: These aren't your typical LED lights. They're filled with gas and chemicals that you do not want to inhale.

Handle With Care: If the fixture is dangerous and needs to be moved, as in this case, do it very carefully.

The Safest Option: The best thing to do is find the breaker, lock it out, and turn it off. This ensures no one can accidentally turn the power back on.

The "Pinch" Solution: If you can't find the breaker right away, hit the off switch and tape it down. This is a temporary fix until you can properly secure the power.

Safety is always the priority. Don't take chances with live electrical components or hazardous materials.
